Kielipankki – The Language Bank of Finland is a service for researchers using language resources. Juho Härme, PhD student at the University of Tampere, tells us about his research on various Kielipankki corpora.
I am Juho Härme, PhD student at the University of Tampere.
In my forthcoming doctoral dissertation, whose working title is The time of Translation – Finnish and Russian Temporal Expressions in a Syntactic and Translation Studies Research, I am writing about the position of adverbials of time in a sentence, as well as variation of this position in Finnish and Russian. My aim is on the one hand to do a comprehensive contrastive analysis of the differences and similarities between the principles regulating the position of adverbials of time in Finnish and Russian, and on the other hand to compare the possible differences between translations and the sentences from the original texts, as well as the expressions of time in the translations, which are presumably more specific then in the original texts.
The resources I am using in my research are ParFin 2016, Finnish-Russian Parallel Corpus of Literary Texts, ParRus 2016, Russian-Finnish Parallel Corpus of Literary Texts, The Finnish Sub-corpus of the Newspaper and Periodical Corpus of the National Library of Finland and The Downloadable Version of the Finnish Text Collection, all of which can be found in Kielipankki – The Language Bank of Finland.
The FIN-CLARIN consortium consists of a group of Finnish universities along with CSC – IT Center for Science and the Institute for the Languages of Finland (Kotus). FIN-CLARIN helps the researchers in Finland to use, to refine, to preserve and to share their language resources. The Language Bank of Finland is the collection of services that provides the language materials and tools for the research community.
All previously published Language Bank researcher interviews are stored in the Researcher of the Month archive.
